WordMasters Challenge™ Grades 3-6
This program complements our Creative Writing program.
The modern word “analogy” comes from the ancient Greek word for “proportionality”. Greek scholars used analogies to directly illustrate similar relationships between two pairs of words, often for the purpose of logical argument. An analogy aims to explain the ideas or things by doing a comparison. An analogy is more elaborate than simile and a metaphor.
For example: Life: train journey :: people: co-passengers
Life is like a train journey and the people we meet are the co-passengers.

WM™ addresses higher-level word comprehension and verbal reasoning (analogies); both lead to excellence in critical reading comprehension. Advanced vocabulary and various forms of analogical reasoning helps the students to think both analytically and metaphorically.
- WordMasters Challenge™ runs from November through April and the preparation starts in August-September.
- The WM challenge analogies are based on special vocabulary lists (25 words in each list) and students work extensively on each vocabulary list. In one season they tackle 3 lists; 75 words.
- Students learn parts of speech, antonyms, synonyms, word usage via sentences and other forms of word for each word. In doing so, they learn at least 5 new words for each vocabulary word in the list. The student's word bank expands exponentially from 25 words to > 125 new words with each word list!
- Students 'think, analyze, and make meaningful word relationships' versus just regurgitating memorized stuff. The proof is in the pudding!
Shown below are just a few analogies created and shared by our students.
