TJ Student Portrait Sheet (SPS)
Parents are requested to form their own small group and contact us for scheduling.
Painting an excellent portrait is essential to distinguish your student from hundreds of other applicants. Each brush stroke needs to be thoughtful. We guide our aspiring students with content, organization, form, focus, and syntax. Students learn how to showcase their individual experiences while highlighting the desirable salient points. Students work with two instructors to get a robust feedback. They master the art of telling their story to the world in their own words.
Why come to us?
Our three children graduated from TJHSST which gave us a unique opportunity to be a part of the TJ community for 10 consecutive years (2009-2019). We have personally experienced the TJ culture evolve over a decade! We have been helping LFS students with SIS and SPS for over a decade. In addition, mentoring students in STEM projects since 2007 and Real-World skills has further provided us with an unparalleled breadth and depth of experiences. As a result, we have an excellent grasp of the little nuances in the application process. We also guide our students on how to kick-start meaningful projects intertwined with their passions and goals. Lastly, we do not believe in cookie cutter shortcuts. Each student gets a 100% from us, without exceptions.

Student Portrait Sheet- Students are given three prompts (mini essays). Students will have to demonstrate Portrait of a Graduate attributes and 21st Century Skills such as:
Students often struggle with responses as they require deep pondering into passions, accomplishments, and goals, and structuring these ideas together in an effective manner. Students may not have a clear idea of why they want to go to TJ or they may not have tangibles to tie in with the TJ philosophy. The goal of the SPS is not to evaluate the student about how many contests the student may have won or to collect a laundry list of his/her STEM activities. It is geared towards the student's passions and real-world skills. Therefore, it is recommended to start streamlining the thought process early-on.

TJHSST Problem-Solving Essay (PS)
Essay is one of the major components of the TJHSST admission test.
- Math and/or Science content
- Topic will include multiple variables/steps
- Applicant response will include solution along with explanation of process to solve problem.
- Written in essay format
Fundamental Math or Science content is not covered in this class. Students applying for TJ are expected to walk-in with strong math and science understanding. This program jumps right into advanced problem solving. If your student needs help with fundamental math, please consider identifying the gaps and strengthening the foundation first. It will be worth the effort.
In each class the students will work on one challenging problem in depth and then practice the best way to showcase his/her knowledge of the topic, method of solving and the solution.

Example # 1: It’s 5:30 AM, and you, a helicopter pilot, have just been told there’s an injured man on a boat you need to get to a hospital. The boat is going towards where you are at 10 mph, but is currently 400 miles away. You need to get him as soon as possible, but you only have 6600 lbs of fuel in your helicopter, which burns 1200 lbs per hour, and always travels at 150 mph. Also, you need to account for 30 min of fuel spent hovering over the boat to get the man into the helicopter, and 1 extra hour of fuel due to helicopter standards. Under these circumstances, when can you depart your station to get the man as soon as possible?
Example # 2: Jean is studying the population of a group of penguins of a certain species. These are some of the discoveries she has made. Equal number of male and female penguins form couples. Each couple raises one chick. At the end of the year, 20% of all the penguins (adults and chicks) die because of natural causes. The penguins can raise the chicks after they are one year old. Develop an equation to solve how many penguins there will be after 7 years if the number of penguins that Jean observed initially was 1000.
