Competitive Math & Problem Solving [H.O.T.S]
Students must be fluent with the AAP grade level math operations/skills to take full advantage of this program.
This program is a good match for elementary students seeking to improve their performance in problem-solving based math competitions. The material is more challenging than what a typical traditional math classroom offers.
Enroll in our program and learn how to solve problem-sums using various kinds of strategies, learn what a mathematical problem is, and how to use problem extensions for enhancing divergent thinking. As it takes time and dedicated practice to hone the problem-solving skills, we encourage students to start early. Mastery takes time and practice. First year should be used for getting the feet wet, decoding the language and exploring the strategies. Second through fourth year should be spent on tackling problems with gradually increasing complexity. Continue to challenge yourself to find different methods to solve.
Enrolled students are eligible to participate in the National CML at no additional fee. Our math teams have been earning the title of National winners for over a decade every single year!
Competition Math Foundations-PS
We are bringing new modules to our elementary students this fall!
Each module will focus on:
MATHCOUNTS
Students in grades 7 and 8 can join our virtual class for a pure MATHCOUNTS class. It will help with AMC too. Learn important math tricks and tips that are very effective in solving problems. Students will also get to explore ingenious methods and alternative techniques. Pre-pandemic, this program was offered only in Great Falls on weeknights in a small group setting.
What is Problem-Solving?
Problem solving is more than a vehicle for teaching and reinforcing mathematical knowledge. It is also a skill which can enhance logical reasoning. Problem solving is an essential but often neglected skill that demands attention from the earliest grades. Basic math word problems are nothing but a combination of certain language tricks and easy calculations. Some students can work with numbers confidently, but simply introducing some language play deviates their thinking process. Students must learn to question and apply mathematical concepts to problem-solving situations on a regular basis.
