An important part of understanding the world around us is to recognize and understand:
Identity, Privilege, Rights and Activism, Environmental Justice, Social Justice, Social Action, Disability, Diversity and Bias.
Students will learn the history of privilege in our society and how it has changed. We will discuss the inequities of different systems in the US and around the world, and their impact on some key privileges such as the healthcare, politics, elections, and education.
Students will learn about activism and how to advocate for a just world.
A few examples of essential questions:
● How do I benefit (or not) from my identities?
● What privileges do I have that others don't?
● How can immigrants get the same opportunities as people born the U.S.?
● How can we make our classrooms equal for both genders?
● What can we change in our schools to include diversity?
● How can we make sure freedom is fair?
● How can different groups work together for everyone's benefit?
● Why is learning about discrimination important to your education and potential future careers?

Students will learn about different modes of communication (verbal, non-verbal, sign language, body language) and how to communicate effectively, how to use dialogue vs. debate, and how to practice positive and inclusive language.
